Applications of Different Grades Phosphoric Acid

Industrial Grade Phosphoric Acid 75%/85%

  • Industrial grade phosphoric acid is used for removing dust from the metal surfaces.
  • Can be used as rust converter by bringing it in direct contact with a rusted iron, or steel tools and other surfaces that are rusted.
  • It is helpful in cleaning the mineral deposits, cement nous smears and hard water stains.

Food Grade Phosphoric Acid 75%/85%

The food grade phosphoric acid 75%/85% is mainly used as an acid agent for seasonings, canned foods, refreshing beverages, and as a nutrient for yeast (a nutritional source for yeast during brewing, which can prevent the reproduction of miscellaneous bacteria).

  • Fertilizer grade phosphoric acid is the raw material for the production of important phosphate fertilizers (superphosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, etc.), and also the raw material for the production of feed nutrients (calcium dihydrogen phosphate).
  • Medical grade phosphoric acid is an important ingredient in over the counter medications to combat nausea.
  • Dentistry: phosphoric acid is mixed with zinc powder and forms zinc phosphate, and it is useful in temporary dental cement. In orthodontics, zinc is used as an etching solution to help clean and roughen the surface of teeth.
  • Water treatment. Phosphoric acid can be used in water treatment, including drinking water and industrial water. By adding an appropriate amount of phosphoric acid to the water, the deposition of scale and calcium and magnesium ions can be effectively prevented, thereby improving water quality.
  • Metal surface treatment. The industrial grade phosphoric acid can be used for metal surface treatment, such as phosphating treatment of metals such as steel, aluminum and copper. Through phosphating treatment, a dense phosphating film can be formed on the metal surface to improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the metal.
  • Acidity. It is a medium-strong acid that can ionize hydrogen ions in aqueous solution, showing acidity.
  • Stability. It is relatively stable at room temperature and not easy to volatilize, but phosphoric acid may decompose or react to form other phosphates under high temperature or alkaline environment.
  • Reducibility. Phosphoric acid can show reducing properties under certain conditions and can undergo redox reactions with oxidants.

There are two main methods for preparing phosphoric acid: wet phosphoric acid and thermal phosphoric acid.

Wet phosphoric acid is produced by the reaction of sulfuric acid with phosphate rock. The process includes ore crushing, sulfuric acid leaching, filtration, purification, concentration and other steps.

Thermal phosphoric acid is produced by the reaction of phosphate rock with oxygen or silicon dioxide at high temperature.

Phosphoric acid is corrosive and irritating to human skin and eyes, and may even cause burns.
